About the band

Four people, one room, no click track.

Lantern Parish started in the winter of 2018 in a rented practice room above a bicycle shop on West Broad Street, Richmond, Virginia. Mara Quinlan and Tobias Reinholt had spent years playing in other people's bands and wanted something slower to build: songs written in a room together, arranged by ear, and finished only when all four people could play them without looking at each other.

The sound sits somewhere between indie rock and Southern soul — a Telecaster through a cranked Deluxe, a Rhodes that never quite gets clean, and a rhythm section that leans back instead of pushing. Desmond Achebe joined on bass after a single rehearsal in 2019. Eloise Fairweather, a church-trained pianist from Petersburg, came in a year later and became the band's second voice.

Three records in, the band still tracks live to tape in a converted tobacco warehouse in Scott's Addition, and still plays Richmond at least twice a year, whatever else the calendar says.
